that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break. there were also funerals today for two more 6 year olds. jessica rekos and james mattioli. we'll have more on those memorials later on in our show. first, we wanted to bring you the very latest that we know about the investigation. our national correspondent susan candiotti has new details. she is outside the lanza home tonight. susan, what can you tell us, the very latest that you have been able to figure out about why this happened? >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, if the shooter in this case was trying to erase his digital footprint, he may have succeeded. because investigators are telling us that that smashed computer that you referred to was so badly damaged, presumably by the shooter himself, that they are having a hard time retrieving data from the hard drive. but they're not giving up. they're still working on it because they want to try to examine it for any e-mails he might have sent, for any writings he left behind, to learn about any websites that he

, connecticut, reopen today, one elementary school was kept closed because of some sort of threat. not sandy hook elementary but yet another school. a principal told parents to keep their kids home. tonight in newtown, families are holding wakes for several victims of last friday's shooting at sandy hook. today two more 6-year-olds were laid to rest. >>> not so long ago, national rifle association broke its silence regarding the newtown massacre. in a statement it released, it said the members were shocked and saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders. it also said they wanted to give the families time to mourn before speaking out. the nra pledges to make sure this never happens again and it is going to hold a news conference on friday. >>> dick's sporting goods stopped selling assault weapons and wal-mart pulled the bush master assault rifle, the gun used in newtown. other gun dealers are seeing a surge in sales. >> reporter: assault rifles are flying off the shelves here. more than three million americans own an ar-15, the most popular assault rifle. >> peo

but his mother was actual hi friends with the principal and psychologist at the sandy hook elementary school z that she volunteered at the school. and that they believe that he may have thought she cared more for the children there at the school than she did for him. another source tells connecticut post there were no medications found that are prescribed for mental illness that. is another avenue authorities are looking into it. whether the mental health, the physical well being of the gunman had anything to do with what happened here, and finally, investigators have also reportedly seized cell phones and video games from the home as well as a computer that may have been damaged. which they're struggling which could mean they're struggling to get information off of that computer. sean? >> thank you very much. we're going to have more on the tragedy later tonight including new efforts to ban certain types of guns in the wake of friday's shooting. the white house came out in support of the movement. we're going to tell you where the president stands on this, but first, there are breaki

still in mourning, students in newtown went back to school. everyone but the sandy hook kids who will return after the winter break to school in a neighboring town. sandra endo has that part of the story. >> reporter: the first day back to school in newtown. children returning to classes tuesday and the painful reminder of those who could not. on the bus ride to school, grief was a constant reminder. >> i noticed it was quiet because people were thinking about the tragedy that happened. >> reporter: at schools teachers and students spent time to reflect. >> they just talked about how things will get better than they are now. i felt safe because when your teachers talk to and comfort you about everything that happened. >> reporter: for students at sandy hook elementary, the next time they'll return to will be in the new year. newtown superintendent says teachers and students need more time to deal with the trauma and get used to the new space in a neighboring town. state and local officials had no estimate on attendance for newtown's first day back at school. but returning to a ro

caused the gunman to snap and go on the shooting rampage in sandy hook elementary school. peter doocy joins us with the exclusive. >> good morning, gretchen, adam lanza may are killed because he was mad at his mom for wanting to have him committed. that is it according to a hoo reason who took fox nuse.com, that adam believed that nancy loved the school where she was volunteering more than him and what i was told adam was aware of her participating the court for conservatorship and her plan to have him committed. high was upset and he thought she wanted to send him away. he was really, really angry. the new york post reported that adam lived in his mom's windowless basement with posters covered by posters of gunce. he would play videos. it was a game called the first person shooter game. police didn't find psychiatric drugs in the lanza house and the medical examiner hased a geneist to figure out if there was a trait that could have led adam lanza to mass murder here. here in connecticut there will be funeral for the victims and one of the teachers killed. >> brian: it is interesting

in newtown, connecticut. first graders from sandy hook elementary gathered to bury two more of their classmates here. on the other side of this, students from other schools here back to school today for the first time since the tragedy. very rough as one high schooler told us, there will be no joy in school for quite some time. we talked to parents dropping off their kids. there were tears and very apprehensive. but they knew this was something they needed to do. one parent said, look, i feel okay about my kid, i know that the teachers here are going to do the best they can because the teachers who did at sandy hook elementary, of course referring to the women there to tried to defend their students. one of those victoria soto will be laid to rest tomorrow. but again, people here starting to talk about healing. starting to talk about normalcy of some sort. but really, what can be normal when you continue to talk about burying six and seven-year-old kids. there is nothing that fits the norm when you discuss that. >> i hear you jay, when you have the baby angels and the teache
